Pretty Cool Chickens

Out with those plain white eggs!  Did you know that chickens can lay a variety of colored eggs?  Our chickens do!

We began raising chickens because we wanted to have fresh, farm raised, free range eggs, laid by happy hens, who also help keep our garden free from pests.  Little did we know, that we would soon get hooked on the idea of providing brown, white, cream, blue, green, pink and chocolate colored eggs to all we know and meet!

Right now, our flock includes 47 hens and 1 rooster (the King).  We have Easter Eggers (a hybrid of the Araucana), Araucanas, a Barred Rock, a Black Australorpe, a Rhode Island Red, a New Hampshire Red, Golden Comets, a California White Leghorn,  Danish Brown Leghorns, Sliver Laced Wyandottes, Black Sex Links and Buff Orpingtons.

In the Spring, we will add Barnevelders, Cuckoo Marans, Welsummers, Cream Brabanters, Silver Spangled Spitzhaubens, Silver Gray Dorkings and Salmon Faverolles to our collection of hens.

Although sometimes we feel overworked and under paid in this venture, it is always a neat feeling to find a new blue or green egg when we check the nests.

We will be selling at the local farmer’s markets in Spring 2011!

Welcome to Sutton Farm!

To live simply is to truly live.

So how do we do that?  We start by learning to preserve what we have, build upon our foundations, and enjoy the beauty around us.

What we do–teach, read, raise chickens for eggs, plant an orchard, garden, photograph, paint, create, build, learn.

Welcome to Sutton Farm!
